As we’ve grown over the past 40 years, our greatest source of pride has become our commitment to community involvement.
This year, we’re honored to announce that Portland’s Home Building Foundation (HBF) has named Rick’s its Company of the Year, recognizing our contributions to enhancing community life through innovative and compassionate projects.

Rick’s partnership with the Home Building Foundation began with a shared vision to address urgent community needs. One of our first joint initiatives was to support the construction of temporary homes through the donation of over 20,000 lineal feet of decking materials. This initiative provided support in the greater Portland area for individuals experiencing homelessness, providing a stable foundation for residents to start rebuilding their lives. This project was about creating shelters and restoring dignity and autonomy to those who had lost so much.
Another impactful project was the construction of a wheelchair-accessible ramp in partnership with Portland’s Project Homeless Connect. This ramp provided critical access to essential services that many of us take for granted to those with disabilities. These projects exemplify how Rick’s Custom Fencing and Decking extends its expertise beyond commercial interests to address and solve real community challenges.
Taylor Stanley, Rick’s Marketing Director, shared her thoughts on the ramp project for Project Homeless Connect, saying it’s “One of those projects that really hits you. Not only are people in a position where they’re faced with a disability, but they’re also challenged by not being able to get the services that may help.”
This sentiment underscores the profound personal impact these initiatives have on the team members involved, providing us with a unique perspective on the power of community assistance.
The award came as a humbling accolade to our team, placing us among the companies we highly think of for their community efforts. “My reaction was very emotional, to be honest,” Stanley remarked. “I’ve seen the caliber of the companies that are getting this recognition, and these are all companies we really look up to and try to emulate. For us to be awarded on that level, it’s really humbling.”
The HBF has been instrumental in enhancing Rick’s engagement with the community. They’ve facilitated partnerships and connected our company with organizations that desperately need support, helping to bridge the gap between resources and needs. “That’s the best part of what the HBF does,” explained Stanley, saying it “connects organizations doing great work on a community level with business owners and the building community that can support them.”
Rick’s has made significant material and labor donations, including over $15,000 worth of composite decking and cedar, which are crucial for completing projects like wheelchair ramps and shelter improvements. These contributions reflect our ongoing commitment to use our resources for community betterment.
Looking ahead, Stanley is optimistic about the continuing partnership with the HBF and the potential to serve the community further. “I just hope we can continue to say yes as needs arise. And optimistically, I hope there are fewer needs as we continue to serve the houseless population,” she noted.
The recognition from the Home Building Foundation underscores our ongoing commitment to giving back. While we’re incredibly proud to receive such an award, we’re excited to continue partnering with HBF and other organizations to make a meaningful impact in our communities.
