Best Fences for Windy Yards
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re used to strong winds, whether we’re experiencing a winter wind storm or big gusts in the Gorge. Winds can have a major impact on a fence, so if you’re looking to replace a fence or install a new one, take the weather into consideration! Although fences should always be designed and installed to withstand normal wear-and-tear and weather conditions, in certain situations, particular fencing options are better than others. Learn more about how wind can damage your fence and what you can do about it. Make sure your fence can withstand the wildest weather!
Position of your house
Your home’s location in relation to the surrounding land can impact how much wind it receives. For example, being on the top of a hill or adjacent to an open field are factors. A home’s orientation affects the amount and speed of wind that you get, too. Plus, living in the Gorge or anywhere in the Pacific Northwest pretty much guarantees that you’ll experience high winds at least once or twice a year! To reduce the threat that wind can have on your fence, consider factors like design, as well as what material you use.
How wind damages fences
Few things make us sadder than a blow-over fence! When wind hits, there are a few factors that make a fence more likely to get damaged.
Factor #1: Weak fence posts
If you are in an area prone to high wind, the industry-standard 4×4 pressure-treated post may not do the trick. You likely need to consider an alternative and lucky for you there are three we suggest: Upgrade to 5×5 pressure-treated post, upgrade to a steel post, and/or set your posts three feet deep instead of the standard two feet.
Factor #2: Poor design
If your fence is constructed without gaps, the fence essentially acts as a big sail. A good gust can pick it up and – whoops – there goes your fence. A competent fence installer will balance your privacy needs with gaps to let wind flow through. Additionally, installation errors like tilted fence posts or fence gaps can lead to instability.
Factor #3: Wrong material
This is where we get opinionated! Not all fence materials are created equal. If you’re looking for a wind-proof fence – or one that is as close to wind-proof as you can get! – then you may need to consider moving away from the standard cedar. That’s why our #1 recommended fence material for windy properties is … the Allegheny or Sherwood Simulated Fence!

Other installation best practices
Do you have your heart set on wood? In that case, there’s still plenty we can do to help your fence stand up to wind. Using 5×5 pressure-treated or metal posts sunk deep enough into the ground (minimum 2’, but 3-4′ may be necessary in certain areas) is a fantastic way to combat those high winds. Overlapping boards are another way to gain strength and privacy while still allowing some airflow.
Maintenance tips
There are some easy steps you can take to help your fence remain in good condition.
- Keep your fence clean: By clearing any weeds or other debris from the fence posts and base of the panels, you’ll be delaying rot. A clean fence means better drainage, which keeps your fence dry.
- Stay on top of repairs: As your fence ages, you may experience some minor issues that require repair. By staying on top of anything that needs to be done, you’ll prevent major issues down the road. Remember, your Rick’s Fencing installed fence likely comes with a warranty, so contact your local Rick’s representative for more information.
- Apply a preservative: As your boards dry and weather, they can become brittle and more prone to cracking and splitting adding to weather-related issues. An oil-based stain product for outdoor use can help keep your boards not only looking their best, but stronger as they age.
