Rick's Community Support Drive Year in Review
At Rick’s Custom Fencing and Decking, giving back to the community is at the heart of what we do. Through our Community Support Drive, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with some truly remarkable organizations this past year. As 2024 comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the meaningful connections we’ve made and the people we’ve been able to support.
While this doesn’t include all the initiatives that Rick’s has had the privilege of participating in, here is a review of some of our proud accomplishments and the incredible work local organizations do.
January
Michelle's Love: $1000 donation
We love supporting Michelle’s Love’s fundraising event to kick off the year. Through volunteering and donations, Michelle’s Love’s Mission is to help relieve the stress of single parents undergoing cancer treatment.
February
Second Harvest Bite 2 Go: $1000 donation
We continued our support of the Bite 2 Go program at Second Harvest, assisting elementary students who struggle to have sufficient nutritional options outside of school hours.
March
Portland Rescue Mission: $3000 donation
We supplied the funds for PRM to build a phone charging station at their Burnside facility, allowing folks using their services to stay connected to job opportunities and necessary communications.
Trillium Family Services project
While building a Rick’s customer’s retaining wall and fence, Rick’s had to remove the existing chain link fence adjoining Trillium Family Services. Rick’s worked with Trillium Family Services to donate the materials and labor to replace this fence when finished.
April
St. Jude: $2500 donation
Rick’s donated $2,500 on behalf of employees celebrating service milestones with the company. Thanks to the long tenure of our amazing staff and their generosity, we can continue to support St. Jude’s life-changing work.
May
Jason Goodding Golf Tournament (Bowmen Family Foundation): $2000 donation
Bowmen Family Foundation’s mission is to offer compassionate support to community members during times of crisis and need. They offer this in memory of Officer Jason Goodding at this annual event that Rick’s has supported for many years.
June
Impact NW: $2500 donation
We continue to support our friends at Impact NW and their important work in preventing homelessness in Portland and beyond.
July
Marcus Lucas Foundation: $5000 donation
We support the efforts of the MLF to provide education assistance to those in need in Portland through support of their annual golf fundraiser.
Make-A-Wish-Trailblaze Challenge: $5000 donation
The Trailblaze Challenge brings hikers from around the state to Silver Falls State Park to raise money and awareness for Make-A-Wish’s mission. The Trailblaze Challenge offers a comprehensive training and fundraising program spanning several months to prepare for a single-day hike of 20 to 30 miles. Rick’s had employees play a support role at the break station to help the hikers mid-hike during their rigorous journey.
The Pit Bull Pen Project
As our winner in the Great American Fence giveaway, The Pit Bull Pen received a free fence thanks to the votes of the Tri-Cities community. We were thrilled that the community chose to support them, as the fence they received opened up almost two additional acres for their rescue dogs to roam free and play!
August
Schoolhouse Supplies: $5000 donation
Rick’s matched the cash donations brought in for Schoolhouse Supplies during the KGW School Supply totaling $5000. Our customers donated through August to supply Portland kids in need, and our employees volunteered to sort all the school supply donations brought in at KGW’s annual event.
September
Home Building Foundation Trap Shoot: $3500 donation
This award-winning residential home building industry event attracts over 400 participants annually for an exciting day of competition and exceptional networking opportunities. Proceeds from the event directly support the Home Building Foundation’s mission to provide safe, dignified shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness.
October
Rick’s received the Home Building Foundation’s Company of the Year award in recognition of our donations of materials and labor and our support in their mission.
Quote from the HBF: “We selected Rick’s Custom Fencing and Decking as Company of the Year for some transformational projects. Rick’s provided supplies and expert carpenters to build a new wheelchair ramp for Project Homeless Connect Washington County. Previously, disabled patrons had to be served outside the day center or had to have their chairs lifted inside. Rick’s also provided an educational opportunity by teaching trainees from Constructing Hope carpentry skills as they assisted building the ramp. Additionally, Rick’s donated lumber, which we have used to build multiple projects for facilities such as Do Good Multnomah’s Kiggins Village. Such supplies help HBF stretch our fundraising dollars to help more shelters.”
November
We Shine Project
We Shine is opening a new microshelter site in Portland, OR. Rick’s stepped up to donate materials and labor for building a new fence, gates, a deck, and a ramp for security and accessibility at this new site. The site is set to open to the public in March 2025 and house up to 10 individuals or couples at a time, with priority given to those with disabilities.
December
Providence Festival of Trees: $4000 donation
The Providence Festival of Trees offers an enchanting Gala and a festive community celebration at the Oregon Convention Center, providing the perfect way to start the holiday season. Proceeds from the silent auction and the live auction of the 17 donated tree installations support Providence Children’s Health. The Rick’s fencing and decking tree was auctioned for over $9,000 at this year’s event!
